Christmas Fun

At the start of the day we had found out that Molly, Mrs.Wynde's dog was in the classroom. Then Mrs.Wynde introduced us to her niece Kate. Kate marked the role. Mrs.Wynde told us that we were making christmas trees for our tables. So we went out to the oval and we started looking for good branches. We had finally found 6 good branches. We went back to the classsroom. Kate had gone outside to spraypaint the branches silver. While Kate was spray painting the branches we were given our Christmas activity book. While we were doing that Kate had finished spray painting and she started to melt the chocolate. Mrs.Wynde picked 6 people to put tanbark at the bottom of the pots and to fill sand up to the top. After Kate finished melting the chocolate she started to call people to put some melted chocolate in the mould. We all got to do 2 each. After that some people went to put the chocolate in the fridge. Before recess we made cup-cakes. Kate picked people to tip and do things. At the end everyone had made a cupcake. After recess Kate was calling people to decorate their cupcake. Others were making baskets to put in their cup-cakes in. After people had finished making their baskets they went on to make their stars which had a picture of their face on it. There was another activity to do which was making baubles. We were making stars and baubles to put on our table tree. Mrs.Wynde gave us some decorations to put on our trees. We were trying to make our cupcakes look like snowmen. It was great fun.

Some of the shapes were a Cuboid, Octagonal Prism, triangular Prism, triangular Pyramid, cone, Hexagonal Prism, Square Pyramid, and a cube,. We did it so we could learn about corners, edges, and faces.

Famous Australians

Grade 4Wy were very lucky this week because we had some famous Australians that came in to talk to us. George Bass( explorer ) came to tell us about why he was famous and what he did to influence Australia's history. We found out that he and Matthew Flinders found the strait between Tasmania and mainland Australia.
We also had William Wills who along with Robert O'Hara Burke explored the middle of Australia from the south and north. The purpose of this exploration was to find out what the middle of Australia looked like so they could put telegraph lines to join the different colonies.
Mary Wade came to talk to us about how she was the youngest female convict to be sent to Australia. We have enjoyed all these presentations very much and the children did a great job of informing us about their Famous Australian.

AUTHOR STUDY

On Friday level 3 had an incursion with Author/ Illustrator Roland Harvey. The children wrote their reflections of his visit and how our author study unit has helped them with their writing.

When Roland Harvey came he showed us how to set out a book when you write one.
The author study unit has helped me because now I know how to write a book. I learnt I can use dialogue and different sorts of punctuation like elipses. I learnt that you can get ideas from anyone you know, like friends or family.
Harrison 4WY

On Friday 16th September we had a Roland Harvey incursion. In all of his books his illustrations are very detailed. I learnt that if your illustrations are very detailed it will help the reader understand the book better. Since we have been doing author studies I have now put repetition in my writing pieces.
Dylan 4WY

When Friday 16th came my class and the other grade 3's and 4's had an incursion with Roland Harvey. He started as an illustrator then he became an author because he didn't like drawing pictures for other people's stories. Roland Harvey draws very detailed pictures. When he writes books he uses people from his life in his stories. For example in the story 'In The Bush' he used his family as characters and got his ideas for the story from their family holiday to the bush.
I really enjoyed when Roland created letters into human letters.
Roland Harvy and the other authors we have studied have helped me to create ideas for my story, how to write character descriptions and gave me ideas on how to set out my stories.
Ann 4WY

Last Friday 16th September was the day Roland Harvey came to our school to talk about his illustrations and how he wrote his books. I learnt that he gets his ideas from his family. He used to be just an illustrator but then decided to write some books.
I think that studying authors has helped me to be able to format the text of my stories and has helped me to know how to put repetition in my writing.

Blue Light Youth Camp

The childrn wrote postcards to other people about their camping experience. Here are some postcards.

Dear Tahli,
We are at camp and me and my friends are having the best time. Today is Tuesday and we are going into town. When we passed all the shops and spotted the lolly shop, I couldn't wait to go later that afternoon. Anyway we were on our bikes, pedalling as fast as we could to catch up to the other kids. Finally we got to the BMX track which was basically dust! There was a little stumpy hill and we had to push our bikes up to get to the top. Then you waited to go down the hill and 'wooh' that was fun.
Aniesha

Dear Reema,
Today we are going on a big, big, big bush walk up a hill. It was so hard and steep that on our stop I ate two whole apples in a row and drank two whole bottles of water. I enjoyed the walk back more. I could smell the trees. I could see lots and lots of red faces. I could hear all the boys and girls and even teachers puffing with their hands on their knees.
Melissa Joy

Dear Granny and Pop,
On Wednesday 7th we all had a big day ahead of us because we had the Mt Tarrangower Challenge Walk after breakfast. I think the walk went for nearly 2 hours. I was already puffed when we were half way up the hill. When we got to the top I was so hungry and thirsty that I had an apple and a bottle of water. Then I went up the tower and it was so scary.

2D Shapes

It's a Friday and the time is 12:15. The first thing I knew was that the three high school girls, Cindy,Francis and Claudia are coming into help us with our maths. The class all went quiet as they waited for the three girls to walk in the room.Suddenly we hear a knock then the door squeaking as it opens."Hooray" we all shout.Mrs.Wynde stated to put us into groups and the girls decided what activity they would like to do.First I had kinder squares with Mrs.Wynde where we cut the kinder square into four triangles and make a shape with all four triangle. The second activity I did was the tangrams with Francis. We had to cut out different shapes and make a big square. We then moved on to the pattern blocks with Claudia where we had to use different shapes to make a hexagon.Last but not least we moved on to making a triangle with matchsticks where we had to make 13 triangle with in a big triangle.I can't wait until next Friday to do more other activities.

Reema

After snack there high school girls came to our classroom. Their names are Francis, Cindy and Cloudia. When I did pattern blocks with Cloudia I found out that 6 triangles make a hexagon. I also found out that 3 rhombus make a hexagon and with a square you can't make a hexagon.
When ten minutes I went and did tooth picks with Cindy. During the 10 minutes my group and I had to make a big triangle out of a 9 small triangles. I ahd found out I had made 13 triagles when I had finished.
Next I did kinda squares with Mrs.Wynde. I had made a square, rhombus rectangle, triangle and a tripezium with some help.
After that I did tamgrams with Fransic. I could not find out how to make the square so I got help by Francis. At the end I had made a tamgram square.

DISCO

People screamed to hear their favourite songs.I saw smiles and lights flashing, people wearing disco clothes and wearing glowing items.I also heard lots of chatter, laughter and Mr.Judkins talking through the microphone.I smelt people with perfume and the chips.I tasted the fresh water when I dranked it.I also felt my glow items and the money that I owned. I,Robin and Vanessa danced happily while our favourite songs were on.I heared lots of money dropping, some stomping and toilet doors opening. My friends was lesstalking and MORE DANCING!

After the last songs, we all had to sit down and wait for teahers to call our names to go home.

Denise

On Friday at the gym the school disco was on. I came in the door and I heard blasting music into my ears. I heard my friends yelling my name loudly over the music! The rainbow colured lights were flashing onto the brick walls. Money was clicking together as Mrs. Rawlins colected it. The chips and chocolate smell was in the air as I was tempted to buy some. As I was dancing I feld people knocking into me.

Aniesha

When I walked in to the the disco room with Morgaine the first thing I heard was the speakers blasting my favourite songs then all the chatter and laughter came to me. I looked around and saw all the people dancing and wearing cool disco costumes. I could smell girls wearing perfume and kids eating chips. Me and Morgaine ran into the disco room and started Dancing.

Robin.

As I walked in the door of the gym with Robin, I thought I was going to go deaf from the pounding music and the screaming people. But then I thought, it is a disco after all.
I could see lights wizzing past. I saw little, still lights from the braids in peoples hair (even boys!) and big flashing lights from peoples braclets.
I danced with my friends to lots of different types of music. Although I sat out on Justin Beiber.
I could smell people eating Boost Bars and TimeOuts. Yum! I could also smell girls perfume and hairspray and boys deoderant. And Robin munching on Salt and Vinegar chips!!

Author Study- Margaret Wild

My favourite book was The Slumber Party because I made a text to text connection. This book is similar to the Alison Lester books.Margaret Wild talks about all the characters in her story. What I noticed about Mararet Wild's craft is she likes to write fictional stories. Also in a lot of her stories she likes to use descriptive language. She seems to get her ideas from her children and her family and friends. She sometimes writes her story in a problem and solution structure which is the normal narrative structure but sometimes she writes in question and answer structure or list of facts like in Our Granny.
Most of her stories are told by a narrator and some have repetition.
Jonathan

My favourite book was Creatures in my Beard because it was funny. I liked it because the boy said to his dad that there were creatures living in his beard but the dad said no there isn't. Then when his dad was lying down all these creatures popped out of his beard and that is why I think it is a good book. Why I like Margaret Wild books is because she writes great beginnings. She can also make us visualise the characters and what is going to happen next. She also makes the audience engaged really well and she uses a lot of adjectives. I can also make text to text connections and this helps me.
Anthony

My favourite book was The Slumber Party. The reason is because this book was set out differently from other picture story books. I liked how it was set out in boxes and it had pictures that allowed us to predict. There was dialogue for each of the characters. The text type was realistic fiction. The story followed a sequence of events for each part of the slumber party. Most of the sentences began with a character's name. The story was told by the narrator and there were small problems throughout the story.
Aniesha

My favourite book by Margaret Wild is Miss Lily's Fabulous Pink Feather Boa. I liked it because of its descriptive language and it is about endangered animals. It is also written in a problem and solution structure. The problem was the Potaroo thought he was the last Potaroo but at the end he found there were more potaroos not just him.
Melissa L

My favourite book that Margaret Wild wrote is Fox. The reason why I like this book is the way the illustrations are big and the way the writing is set out. Margaret Wild uses ideas from her life. She sometimes has characters talking or the narrator tells the story. Most of the stories we have read have a theme or message. Most of the books have dialogue in them.

DIVISION

You might wonder what we are doing having fun when it is maths time. Well we were doing division and we decided to play a game of Statues. Each time the music stopped Mrs. Wynde asked us to make a group and we had to see if we had any remainders. Example: 22 how many 4's equals 5 and 2 remainders. Playing this game helped us to understand about division with remainders and what that all means. Mrs. Wynde was a terrible dancer but we had fun anyway.

ENDANGERED ANIMALS INCURSION

‘Squawk, squawk,’ went the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo, as Josh entered our room.
On Tuesday we had an incursion about endangered animals. The guy who brought the animals in was named Josh and he came from Reptile Encounters.
The animals I learnt about were the Growling Grass Frog. They’re endangered because of habitat loss. Also introduced fish are eating their eggs.
The Penny Turtle is endangered because they are sold for pet trade, cattle are stomping on their eggs and feral animals are eating them. They are trying to help them by breeding them in captivity, protecting their habitat and not allowing them to be sold as pets.
The Red tailed black cockatoo is endangered because of a loss of habitat and they only have one egg per season. The solution is monitoring their numbers and re-planting the habitat.
The last animal was a crocodile and I got to hold a crocodile’s tail and it was awesome.
By Caitlyn

On Tuesday 14th June Reptile Encounters came into our class. We are studying endangered animals and Josh showed us lots of animals that were either vulnerable or endangered. One was the Squirrel Glider. They are endangered because they nest in hollow trees and people are cutting down the hollow trees. They are also suffering from a lack of food. To assist the Squirrel Glider, people are trying to improve their environment by planting new trees.
Another animal is the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo. They are endangered because of a loss of habitat. Also they have only one baby a year. To assist them, people are monitoring their numbers and re-planting their habitat.
There is also the Woma Python. They’re suffering from a loss of habitat. Also feral predators such as cats and dogs are eating them.
I got to hold the massive Olive Python. With my hands underneath its massive body I could feel its muscles. It was freaky, cool but freaky! I could not stop thinking about it.
Morgaine

On Tuesday 14th June all of the grade 4’s had an incursion. There was a man called Josh who told us all about the animals. We had this incursion so we can learn more about endangered animals. Josh brought in all these animals and here’s a list of them, Growling Grass Frog, Merry River Turtle, Yellow Spotted Monitor, Red Tailed Black Cockatoo, Squirrel Glider, Woma Python, Olive Python and Salt Water Crocodile.
The Merry River Turtle is endangered because it has been sold to the pet trade and when the cattle run through the Merry River they squash the turtle eggs. To help the Merry River Turtle they are being kept in captivity so they can breed.
The Yellow Spotted Monitor is endangered because they eat cane toads which are poisonous. People are trying to reduce the amount of cane toads.
The Woma Python is endangered because of a loss of habitat and feral predators. The Woma Python is protected and its habitat is being protected.

MINI ATHLETICS

On Tuesday 31st of May our grade did a length activity: Mini Athletics. We all were in groups of 4 or 5. Then it was time to do for activities: standing long jump, handballing, discus and shot put. All of these activities we had to measure how far we jumped, punched and threw.
Adam
On Tuesday 31st of May we were doing mini athletics. The reason being because our math topic was length and measurement so we could measure our handball, throwing and jumping. It was a nice bright sunny day to do all these sports. We played shotput, disus, standing long jump and handballing. All of us enjoyed our time outside and I think we could do it again. As we each are having a turn we got to measure and record it in metres and centimetres. We rotated to each sport and enjoyed each sport. When we were finished we put all our mesurement into our math book.

SMARTIE MATHS

We were investigating fractions in maths. To help us with our investigations we all had a box of smarties. First we had to open the box and count how many smarties we had. Then we sorted the smarties into colour groups. Next we counted how many colours we had in each group. If we had 15 smarties all together and 4 of them were yellow we wrote that 4/15 were yellow. After we had written the fractions for all the colours we then added 2 colours together and wrote the fraction. Eg: red were 5/15 and blue was 3/15 all together it was 8/15.Finally we added all the colours together and found that they came to one whole 15/15. Lastly we got to eat them. YUM!!!

Molly At School

Mrs.Wynde brought Molly the dog in because we were choosing what pet we wanted in our classroom. Most people chose a dog and Mrs.Wynde said how hard keeping a dog is and then she said she was going to bring Molly the dog into the classroom. When Mrs. Wynde brought Molly in we played with the dog. She went sprinting around the classroom. Mrs. Wynde was right about keeping a dog in the classroom. When the workers were busy in the next classroom, Molly was barking non- stop and distracted us from doing most of our work. At recess we walked around the oval with her and then she was jumping all over us and she kept licking our faces. When it was the end of the day we went all sad because we had so much fun throughout the day. We hugged her tight and we said our good-byes and we went home.
By Jonathan

On Thursday 7th April Mrs. Wynde brought her dog, Molly. The reason she brought her dog was because first term is about pet care and Mrs. Wynde was showing all the people who voted for dogs how hard it was to have a dog in the classroom. We got to pat her, play fetch and walk her. Sometimes it was a bit frustrating because sometimes when we were doing our work Molly kept barking at us. When Molly did the barking Mrs. Wynde had to say in a loud voice, 'No, Molly.' When I first touched her fur it was soft and silky. We wished we could have Molly as our class pet but we know she is Mrs. Wynde's pet.
