Famous Australians

Grade 4Wy were very lucky this week because we had some famous Australians that came in to talk to us. George Bass( explorer ) came to tell us about why he was famous and what he did to influence Australia's history. We found out that he and Matthew Flinders found the strait between Tasmania and mainland Australia.
We also had William Wills who along with Robert O'Hara Burke explored the middle of Australia from the south and north. The purpose of this exploration was to find out what the middle of Australia looked like so they could put telegraph lines to join the different colonies.
Mary Wade came to talk to us about how she was the youngest female convict to be sent to Australia. We have enjoyed all these presentations very much and the children did a great job of informing us about their Famous Australian.

AUTHOR STUDY

On Friday level 3 had an incursion with Author/ Illustrator Roland Harvey. The children wrote their reflections of his visit and how our author study unit has helped them with their writing.

When Roland Harvey came he showed us how to set out a book when you write one.
The author study unit has helped me because now I know how to write a book. I learnt I can use dialogue and different sorts of punctuation like elipses. I learnt that you can get ideas from anyone you know, like friends or family.

On Friday 16th September we had a Roland Harvey incursion. In all of his books his illustrations are very detailed. I learnt that if your illustrations are very detailed it will help the reader understand the book better. Since we have been doing author studies I have now put repetition in my writing pieces.

When Friday 16th came my class and the other grade 3's and 4's had an incursion with Roland Harvey. He started as an illustrator then he became an author because he didn't like drawing pictures for other people's stories. Roland Harvey draws very detailed pictures. When he writes books he uses people from his life in his stories. For example in the story 'In The Bush' he used his family as characters and got his ideas for the story from their family holiday to the bush.
I really enjoyed when Roland created letters into human letters.
Roland Harvy and the other authors we have studied have helped me to create ideas for my story, how to write character descriptions and gave me ideas on how to set out my stories.

Last Friday 16th September was the day Roland Harvey came to our school to talk about his illustrations and how he wrote his books. I learnt that he gets his ideas from his family. He used to be just an illustrator but then decided to write some books.
I think that studying authors has helped me to be able to format the text of my stories and has helped me to know how to put repetition in my writing.

Blue Light Youth Camp

The childrn wrote postcards to other people about their camping experience. Here are some postcards.

Dear Tahli,
We are at camp and me and my friends are having the best time. Today is Tuesday and we are going into town. When we passed all the shops and spotted the lolly shop, I couldn't wait to go later that afternoon. Anyway we were on our bikes, pedalling as fast as we could to catch up to the other kids. Finally we got to the BMX track which was basically dust! There was a little stumpy hill and we had to push our bikes up to get to the top. Then you waited to go down the hill and 'wooh' that was fun.

Dear Reema,
Today we are going on a big, big, big bush walk up a hill. It was so hard and steep that on our stop I ate two whole apples in a row and drank two whole bottles of water. I enjoyed the walk back more. I could smell the trees. I could see lots and lots of red faces. I could hear all the boys and girls and even teachers puffing with their hands on their knees.
Melissa Joy

Dear Granny and Pop,
On Wednesday 7th we all had a big day ahead of us because we had the Mt Tarrangower Challenge Walk after breakfast. I think the walk went for nearly 2 hours. I was already puffed when we were half way up the hill. When we got to the top I was so hungry and thirsty that I had an apple and a bottle of water. Then I went up the tower and it was so scary.

2D Shapes

It's a Friday and the time is 12:15. The first thing I knew was that the three high school girls, Cindy,Francis and Claudia are coming into help us with our maths. The class all went quiet as they waited for the three girls to walk in the room.Suddenly we hear a knock then the door squeaking as it opens."Hooray" we all shout.Mrs.Wynde stated to put us into groups and the girls decided what activity they would like to do.First I had kinder squares with Mrs.Wynde where we cut the kinder square into four triangles and make a shape with all four triangle. The second activity I did was the tangrams with Francis. We had to cut out different shapes and make a big square. We then moved on to the pattern blocks with Claudia where we had to use different shapes to make a hexagon.Last but not least we moved on to making a triangle with matchsticks where we had to make 13 triangle with in a big triangle.I can't wait until next Friday to do more other activities.

Reema

After snack there high school girls came to our classroom. Their names are Francis, Cindy and Cloudia. When I did pattern blocks with Cloudia I found out that 6 triangles make a hexagon. I also found out that 3 rhombus make a hexagon and with a square you can't make a hexagon.
When ten minutes I went and did tooth picks with Cindy. During the 10 minutes my group and I had to make a big triangle out of a 9 small triangles. I ahd found out I had made 13 triagles when I had finished.
Next I did kinda squares with Mrs.Wynde. I had made a square, rhombus rectangle, triangle and a tripezium with some help.
After that I did tamgrams with Fransic. I could not find out how to make the square so I got help by Francis. At the end I had made a tamgram square.

DISCO

People screamed to hear their favourite songs.I saw smiles and lights flashing, people wearing disco clothes and wearing glowing items.I also heard lots of chatter, laughter and Mr.Judkins talking through the microphone.I smelt people with perfume and the chips.I tasted the fresh water when I dranked it.I also felt my glow items and the money that I owned. I,Robin and Vanessa danced happily while our favourite songs were on.I heared lots of money dropping, some stomping and toilet doors opening. My friends was lesstalking and MORE DANCING!

After the last songs, we all had to sit down and wait for teahers to call our names to go home.

Denise

On Friday at the gym the school disco was on. I came in the door and I heard blasting music into my ears. I heard my friends yelling my name loudly over the music! The rainbow colured lights were flashing onto the brick walls. Money was clicking together as Mrs. Rawlins colected it. The chips and chocolate smell was in the air as I was tempted to buy some. As I was dancing I feld people knocking into me.

Aniesha

When I walked in to the the disco room with Morgaine the first thing I heard was the speakers blasting my favourite songs then all the chatter and laughter came to me. I looked around and saw all the people dancing and wearing cool disco costumes. I could smell girls wearing perfume and kids eating chips. Me and Morgaine ran into the disco room and started Dancing.

Robin.

As I walked in the door of the gym with Robin, I thought I was going to go deaf from the pounding music and the screaming people. But then I thought, it is a disco after all.
I could see lights wizzing past. I saw little, still lights from the braids in peoples hair (even boys!) and big flashing lights from peoples braclets.
I danced with my friends to lots of different types of music. Although I sat out on Justin Beiber.
I could smell people eating Boost Bars and TimeOuts. Yum! I could also smell girls perfume and hairspray and boys deoderant. And Robin munching on Salt and Vinegar chips!!

Author Study- Margaret Wild

My favourite book was The Slumber Party because I made a text to text connection. This book is similar to the Alison Lester books.Margaret Wild talks about all the characters in her story. What I noticed about Mararet Wild's craft is she likes to write fictional stories. Also in a lot of her stories she likes to use descriptive language. She seems to get her ideas from her children and her family and friends. She sometimes writes her story in a problem and solution structure which is the normal narrative structure but sometimes she writes in question and answer structure or list of facts like in Our Granny.
Most of her stories are told by a narrator and some have repetition.
Jonathan

My favourite book was Creatures in my Beard because it was funny. I liked it because the boy said to his dad that there were creatures living in his beard but the dad said no there isn't. Then when his dad was lying down all these creatures popped out of his beard and that is why I think it is a good book. Why I like Margaret Wild books is because she writes great beginnings. She can also make us visualise the characters and what is going to happen next. She also makes the audience engaged really well and she uses a lot of adjectives. I can also make text to text connections and this helps me.
Anthony

My favourite book was The Slumber Party. The reason is because this book was set out differently from other picture story books. I liked how it was set out in boxes and it had pictures that allowed us to predict. There was dialogue for each of the characters. The text type was realistic fiction. The story followed a sequence of events for each part of the slumber party. Most of the sentences began with a character's name. The story was told by the narrator and there were small problems throughout the story.
Aniesha

My favourite book by Margaret Wild is Miss Lily's Fabulous Pink Feather Boa. I liked it because of its descriptive language and it is about endangered animals. It is also written in a problem and solution structure. The problem was the Potaroo thought he was the last Potaroo but at the end he found there were more potaroos not just him.
Melissa L

My favourite book that Margaret Wild wrote is Fox. The reason why I like this book is the way the illustrations are big and the way the writing is set out. Margaret Wild uses ideas from her life. She sometimes has characters talking or the narrator tells the story. Most of the stories we have read have a theme or message. Most of the books have dialogue in them.

DIVISION

You might wonder what we are doing having fun when it is maths time. Well we were doing division and we decided to play a game of Statues. Each time the music stopped Mrs. Wynde asked us to make a group and we had to see if we had any remainders. Example: 22 how many 4's equals 5 and 2 remainders. Playing this game helped us to understand about division with remainders and what that all means. Mrs. Wynde was a terrible dancer but we had fun anyway.
